Understanding channel effectiveness

Companies House Logo

Companies House are responsible for compiling the register of companies in the UK. They incorporate and dissolve limited companies, register company information and make it available to the public. Companies House employs around 1,000 people with 90% based in Cardiff with small teams based in Belfast, Edinburgh and London.

Companies House communicate with their people via a range of internal channels, including intranet, digital screens, events, and newsletters. The Internal Communications team were keen to evaluate current channels to understand effectiveness and make recommendations for change. To make sure any changes implemented took into consideration a broad spread of views, colleagues from all four locations were invited to participate in the research, including a representative sample of grades, teams and working environments.

With a challenging budget we used a range of research techniques including qualitative interviews to reach colleagues in different locations and from different grades. We conducted workshops with those based at Cardiff, providing opportunities for feedback and to capture suggestions for improvement. And to provide quantitative data we hosted a short online survey and many submitted comments and recommendations for improvement.

Findings from the review equipped the Internal Communications team with insights into channel effectiveness including recommendations for improvements to the existing channel infrastructure including communication roles of people managers, together with a baseline of statistically relevant data. This formed the basis of a robust report which was supported by separate reports for the main demographic groups.
